The Iloilo City Council is studying a business proposal from the private sector to separate industrial wastes from the regular garbage collection from the streets, markets and commercial establishments.
Iloilo City councilor Lyndon Acap, chairman of the City Council committee on health and sanitation, said the proposal came from Pass Inc., a Cebu-based investor, for a P10 million treatment facility inside the city-owned Calajunan dumpsite for medical wastes and other industrial wastes.
Acap said his proposed ordinance, approved on first reading last week, focused on the proper collection of solid and liquid toxic wastes, especially from hospitals, medical clinics, funeral parlors, including from septic tanks and other high risk industries.
The city’s Solid Waste Management Board is evaluating the proposal of PASS Inc. before approval of the City Council.
Acap said PASS Inc. will be the one to impose charges from the hospitals for the collection fees; and a certain percentage will go to the City Government’s fund.
The business proposal of the company was being considered after it was established that the proponent is requesting the use of 2,000 square meters of land within the Calajunan dumpsite in Mandurriao district.
