Manufacturers will have no choice but to adapt to a system that minimises the need for virgin natural resources, and they might as well get an early advantage, says the head of sustainable business for retail giant Marks & Spencer. Companies can prepare for future resource shortages by adopting closed-loop manufacturing, which sources production materials from waste, by-products or other alternative sources. He cited a recent McKinsey report which said that a circular economy using closed-loop manufacturing could help the world meet 30 per cent of its resource needs in 2030.
