She will be based in Kuala Lumpur, reporting to the group’s headquarters in Hong Kong. Dr Syafrina was formerly head of sustainability with Malaysian property developer Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB) and more recently, regional sustainability head with pharmaceutical company Novozymes before joining Plaza Premium Group.
Dr Syafrina, who holds a doctorate in environmental governance and democracy from Imperial College, has also been supporting the development of Malaysia’s National Planetary Health Action Plan.
Plaza Premium’s founder and chief executive officer Song Hoi See said as the company’s business has expanded its hospitality services, it had adopted more sustainable practices and products throughout its ecosystem and was committed to responsible growth in the travel and tourism industry.
Earlier this year, Plaza Premium Group signed its commitment to the UN Global Compact, the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative and pledged support for the compact’s 10 universal principles pertaining to human rights, the environment, labour and anti-corruption.
The hospitality provider plans to conduct a materiality assessment later this year, followed by the development of a sustainability strategy and roadmap, to effectively manage and reduce its environmental footprint across operations.
