German utility E.ON will move its carbon team from Malaysia to Singapore this month, and aims to ramp up investment in clean-energy projects in South-east Asia, a senior official said yesterday.
The firm sees the region, and particularly Indonesia, as offering strong opportunities in projects that yield United Nations-backed carbon offsets, and already has a “full pipeline” of prospective investments, said Mr Frederic Boeuf, regional director of project development for E.ON Climate and Renewables.
Mr Boeuf said the Singapore operation will start initially with six carbon specialists and build up to eight by the end of December.
The move to Singapore follows that of other carbon project developers - the city state is emerging as a regional centre for carbon and clean-tech investors.
“We’re currently implementing four projects and we are in negotiations for many more,” Mr Boeuf said, adding that the number of South-east Asian projects under evaluation totalled 20.
