The government has delayed the launch of the implementation of the feed-in tariff (FiT) system for the renewable energy sector from Sept 1 to Dec 1.
The Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui said on Monday, Aug 15 the revised launch date was due to recent updates on the preparatory work.
“The rationale for the revised schedule in the implementation of the FiT is because the Renewable Energy Act, 2011 requires seven subsidiary legislations for it to be enforced and to enable the FiT system to be implemented smoothly,” Chin said.
He said the delay was to ensure the FiT system would be implemented in a fair, effective and transparent manner and avoid any glitches in its implementation.
Chin said the subsidiary legislations were complex and technical in nature, and required more time than originally envisaged to be crafted.
The FiT scheme is mandated under the Renewable Energy Act 2011 which was passed in the Parliament in April.
The implementation of the FiT is a long term commitment from the government to enable renewable energy to reach a target of at least 985 MW by 2015 and 2,080 MW by 2020. The renewable resources eligible for the FiT are biogas, biomass, small hydros and solar photovoltaic.
