Greening buildings could be as simple as adding gardens at rooftops, lining up potted plants on the balcony, and growing vines on the wall. Hema Kumar, founder of India Green Infrastructure Network (IGIN) said even these little changes can reduce air pollution and mitigate the heat island effect. The IGIN, in a three day conference on sustainability and green infrastructure in Bangalore, showed how simple changes in houses can facilitate sustainable practices like efficient rain water harvesting system, as well as recharging of ground water tables. It also showcased best practices in Singapore, a garden city, which similarly witnessed the urban crisis that Bangalore is now experiencing.
