HDB conferred award for excellence in sustainable development

The Housing & Development Board (HDB) was on Tuesday conferred the Singapore Sustainability Award 2012 Green Technology Award.

The award recognises HDB’s contributions to drive sustainable development efforts in its towns and estates as a responsible master planner and the largest developer of housing in Singapore.

CEO of HDB Dr Cheong Koon Hean said: “HDB is honoured to be the only public sector recipient winning the Singapore Sustainability Award - Green Technology Award this year.

“As the largest developer in Singapore, HDB is constantly striving to develop world-class public housing and build a community for comfortable green living - one that is sustainable and adopts best practices in environmental sustainability.”

In a statement, HDB says that from the onset, its towns are planned comprehensively to include all key facilities to create a work-live-learn-play environment to meet residents’ needs.

Flats are designed to embrace local tropical climate conditions, utilising passive design strategies to achieve energy, water and waste management.

HDB says it strives constantly to achieve more through new ideas and innovations to stretch its environmental targets.

Inaugurated in 2009, the Singapore Sustainability Awards is an initiative of the Singapore Business Federation and comprises the Sustainable Business Awards and the Green Technology Awards.

The awards aim to recognise companies for their outstanding sustainable business and green technology practices.

Besides the Singapore Sustainability Award 2012 - Green Technology Award, HDB was also conferred the Built Environment Leadership Platinum Award — the highest accolade for BCA’s Built Environment Leadership Award.

The award was for demonstrating excellence and leadership in shaping a safe, high quality, sustainable and friendly built environment in Singapore.

This is the first time a public sector organisation has been conferred the Built Environment Leadership Award.

Other recent wins for HDB include the FIABCI Prix d’Excellence Award 2012 for the mixed development at Clementi Town Centre and the Grand Prize for Excellence in Environmental Engineering, presented by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, to recognise the environmental sustainability concepts adopted for the Punggol Waterway.
