Sustainability measures in the fisheries sector in Kerala, India need an urgent re-examination. E.G. Silas, former director of the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) said that energy conservation in fisheries harvest and the implementation of best practices has to be given more importance. Unsustainable fishing and the resulting fish famine, he said, have to be considered in formulating approaches for fish harvesting. He said underwater technologies such as scuba diving, as well as remote operated vehicles can be used to improve harvest procedures and align it with resource conservation measures.
