Indian government asked to utilize thermal and hydro-electrical plants

The Indian government has come under criticism for bowing to commercial pressure to use non-renewable power sources rather than thermal and hydro resources in the state of  Andhra Pradesh.

Speaking at a public meeting in Visakhapatnam, the state’s second biggest city, former Union Energy Secretary E.A.S. Sarma claimed that the growing gap between supply and demand is due to government policies that suit private players such as Reliance Power.

He said that by concentrating on oil and gas exploration projects, the older thermal and hydro-electrical power plants which had provided all of Andhra Pradesh’s requirements, were being overlooked in investment terms.
