The Jakarta administration will soon hold a tender pre-qualification for the mass rapid transit (MRT) project, following the completion of the basic design of the rail-based project.
“Over the next one or two months the pre-qualification could be started and the entire tender will be completed this year. Construction could begin in 2012 and by 2016 it could be operational,” Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo said Wednesday, as quoted by Antara.
Fauzi said in the first stage the MRT would cover the 15.5-kilometer Lebakbulus-Hotel Indonesia route, with 10.5 kilometers of track above ground and 5 km underground.
Six underground stations will be constructed along the route, at Masjid Al Azhar, Istora Senayan (Ratu Plaza), Bendungan Hilir, Setiabudi, Dukuh Atas, the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle. Seven elevated stations will also be built, in Lebak Bulus, Fatmawati, Cipete Raya, H Nawi, Blok A, Blok M and Sisingamangaraja.
“During the initial operation stage, the MRT will be able to carry 212,000 people per day, which can eventually be increased to 960,000 per day. The route can be covered in 30 minutes, and the tickets will be integrated with related modes of transportation,” he said.
During the initial operation stage, trains are expected to depart every five minutes, which could be increased to every three minutes.
