LG Electronics on Monday said it will start purchasing more parts from vendors actively partaking in a corporate campaign to reduce greenhouse gases to accelerate eco-friendly growth.
Beginning in 2020, the electronics company said it will purchase 50 trillion won ($57.3 billion) or more worth of parts from vendors who have set up carbon reduction goals.
The companies within the top 1,500 in terms of energy consumption and their supplies to LG will be selected as major vendors for LG to purchase from, LG Electronics said.
For starters, the Seoul-based firm said it will select 200 vendors before the year is out to make sure they set goals for carbon reduction, and deliver on their pledges.
Company officials said LG decided to launch this campaign ? titled LGE Green Program Plus ? after discovering that the carbon footprint its vendors was about eight times as high as its own.
This year, LG Electronics worldwide plants caused about 1.4 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions. This was far below the 12 million tons produced by suppliers and vendors who emitted the gas while producing parts and supplies for LG Electronics.
The world’s third-largest phonemaker’s efforts to reduce carbon use come as global corporations and governments are struggling to contain climate change.
