Visitors to Marina Bay will be able to enjoy cycling along a 2.5-kilometre path by the first quarter of 2013.
It is the first phase of work for a cycling network taking shape at Marina Bay.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is starting work on the first phase, covering a section of Marina Boulevard, Bayfront Avenue and Marina Gardens Drive.
The rest of the cycling network will be developed in tandem with the development of the area.
By 2014, cyclists can look forward to 16 kilometres of cycling paths within Marina Bay.
Dr Chin Kian Keong, LTA’s Group Director of Road Operations and Community Partnership, said: “When fully completed, the cycling network in Marina Bay will enhance cyclists’ experience to nearby attractions like the Marina Barrage and Gardens by the Bay. It will also enhance the area’s draw as a recreational and leisure destination amongst Singaporeans and tourists.”
Certain sections of the cycling network along Marina Boulevard and Bayfront Avenue will be marked by distinctive metallic path markers with an embossed bicycle icon.
Placed at intervals, these markers provide a subtle segregation between cycling paths and pedestrian walkways fronting some developments.
Similar markers have been used in Belgium and Spain.
The LTA has been working closely with the Urban Redevelopment Authority and National Parks Board to implement the Marina Bay cycling network, an initiative under the 2009 Sustainable Development Blueprint to plan for an overall sustainable transport system in Marina Bay.
Apart from the Marina Bay cycling network, about 50 kilometres of cycling path network have also been planned for seven HDB towns - Bedok, Changi-Simei, Pasir Ris, Sembawang, Taman Jurong, Tampines and Yishun.
As at May 2012, 6.4 kilometres of cycling path in these towns have been completed. Work on the remaining cycling network is expected to be completed by 2014.
