ROC President Ma Ying-jeou said April 22 that public-private collaboration on the environment has led to significant improvements, but more work is needed.
“The government is very happy to exchange views with leaders in this field,” Ma said in a meeting celebrating Earth Day with representatives of seven civic groups.
The president noted that environmental sustainability is one of the central planks in his golden decade blueprint, encompassing green energy and carbon reduction, improved disaster prevention and relief mechanisms, and creation of an ecosystem preservation-based homeland. In addition, a popular movement initiated five years ago by the Presidential Office to conserve water, paper, gas and electricity has begun to show results.
Last year, combined government-industry efforts cut carbon emissions by 6.17 million metric tons, exceeding the goal of 4.31 million metric tons by 41 percent, Ma pointed out. “This was equivalent to planting 61, 690 trees.”
