Mahindra commissions rooftop solar plant

Mahindra City Developers Ltd & Mahindra EPC Services — Off-grid Division, commissioned a 75 KW Rooftop solar plant at Mahindra City, Chennai.

The system spread across 800 square metres is on the roof top of ‘The Canopy”, a commercial complex in Mahindra City. The solar power system will generate more than 1,16,000 units (kWh) of clean energy annually, resulting in significant savings in the electricity charge and diesel consumption. It will offset nearly 60 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year. This plant is a part of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) policy for off-grid systems.

“We plan to play a larger role in Off-Grid systems and bridge the last mile gap in the country,” said Mr Vish Palekar, Business Head, Cleantech Ventures, Mahindra Partners, in the release. “Along with rooftops, we are also working closely to solarise telecom towers and power IT centres,” he said.

The Engineering, Procurement and Construction arm of Mahindra Solar — Mahindra EPC — OffGrid Division has commissioned this 75 KW solar power project utilising its proven expertise in design, engineering and construction.

The off-grid division setup under Cleantech Ventures — a division of Mahindra Partners, the Mahindra EPC business (MEPC), provides turnkey services to build large-scale grid-connected solar power plants and rooftop solutions for developers and commercial organisations. The MEPC off-grid division has commissioned projects across residential buildings, carports, SEZ, lighting and rural electrification.

Mahindra City is a PPP between the Mahindra Group and TIDCO (a Tamil Nadu Government undertaking) which has established an integrated business city. Exports from the three sector-specific SEZs were more than Rs 3,500 crore in 2011. The residential zone offers social amenities, including schools, medical centres, retail plazas, a business hotel, recreation and leisure facilities.

Mahindra City has a CBSE school, Mahindra School, managed by the Mahindra School Education Trust and has around 400 children.

Mahindra recently signed up Duet Hotels to bring in a Holiday Inn Express that will be set up as a 4-star business hotel, and is expected to be operational by September 2013.

The next phase of development will include plazas, multiplexes, a hospital, clubs with sports facilities, accommodation for single working professionals.
