Malaysia and Brunei are to increase cooperation in energy efficiency within the Asean framework, says Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili.
He said there was much to be shared as the two friendly neighbours could learn from each other to enhance energy efficiency initiatives.
The minister said Malaysia could learn from what Brunei was doing in the energy efficiency area to encourage youths to have a career in the oil and gas and energy sectors.
He praised Brunei for its industry-driven training for youths to match the human resource capabilities for its oil and gas industry.
Ongkili said this in a statement after a bilateral meeting with his Brunei counterpart, Pehin Datuk Dr Mohammad Yasmin Umar, on the sidelines of the Brunei Energy Week at Brunei Darussalam.
They discussed areas of mutual interest particularly bilateral cooperation and partnership between Malaysia and the oil-rich sultanate.
Mohammad said Brunei was keen to develop renewable energy projects, including hydro-electricity, and wants to learn from Malaysia’s experience in that area.
He said Brunei proposed to export electricity to Sipitang in Sabah from a hydro-power plant to be built in partnership with the Sarawak state government.
The Bruneian minister said he planned to visit the Bakun hydro-electricity project in Sarawak soon.
Mohammad said bilateral collaboration would promote inter-connectivity between Brunei and Sabah as both are close neighbours.
