The implementation of mandatory separation of household solid waste slated for September is capable of reducing the amount of solid waste sent to waste disposal sites by 40 per cent.
Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan said, right now, 33,130 tonnes of solid waste were collected daily in the country and the government had spent RM1.4 billion for solid waste management.
“I can assure that with the implementation of the mandatory household solid waste separation programme, it would improve solid waste collection and management in the country,” he said in a statement here today.
Abdul Rahman was responding to Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan who disagreed with the proposed implementation of the programme and said that it should be reconsidered as the public understanding on the matter was still low.
Abdul Rahman said the ministry had and still in the midst of organising various awareness campaigns to enhance public understanding on the matter.
“I’m sure that with the various campaigns being held, the public will be well informed that the process to separate household solid waste is easy and uncomplicated,” he added.
