The Ministry of Economic Affairs established the Green Trade Project Office March 23 in a bid to help Taiwan compete more effectively in the global green trade market.
Cho Shih-chao, director-general of the MOEA’s Bureau of Foreign Trade, said at the launching ceremony that the office is part of a three-year initiative to promote Taiwan as a major supplier of green products and services.
“As governments around the world start to map out green guidelines for cross-border trade, Taiwanese businesses need to prepare themselves for this new trend,” Cho said.
With coordinated efforts from state agencies, “we expect to see Taiwan’s exports of green products increase by 20 percent in 2011, or twice the expected growth of general merchandise,” he added.
Cho noted that the GTPO will implement measures to enhance local firms’ capabilities to engage in green trade and adopt technologies and processes that are more in line with global standards.
The office will provide consulting services on green product certification and carbon footprint disclosure regulations, he said.
In addition, the GTPO will organize international conferences and exhibitions to bring firms up to speed on international guidelines and trends, Cho said. An advisory committee will also be formed to provide policy suggestions, he added.
To let local businesses learn more about the new office, the MOEA will hold a green trade seminar in Taichung City March 30 and another one in Kaohsiung City April 6, Cho said.
