The electric vehicle arm of Mahindra Group, Mahindra Reva, stated on Wednesday that it will launch an electric version of one of the existing Mahindra & Mahindra vehicles in the Indian market in coming 18 months. The vehicle which will be chosen by Mahindra Reva to be launched as an electric version is widely speculated to be the sports utility vehicle, Scorpio.
Earlier this year, M&M had stated its plans to offer an electric fuel option with its Scorpio model in the Indian market. It added that the technology will then be gradually added to the other Mahindra vehicles in the long run.
While speaking to the reporters on the guidelines of SIAM’s (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers) annual summit in New Delhi, Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicle Chief of Technology and Strategy Chetan Maini said, “In the next 18 months, we will launch an M&M product with electric vehicle technology in India.”
According to Mr. Maini, Mahindra Reva has already fitted the new electric car technology in M&M vehicles, and the model is currently in the testing stage .However, He did not reveal the name of the M&M model that will be launched in electric version.
Mahindra Reva plans to enhance its dealership network to 50 outlets by the end of this year from existing 24 dealers from where the company sells its electric cars. The firm plans to expand its annual manufacturing capacity to 30,000 units from existing capacity of 3,000 units.
