Samsung, LG ranked among top eco-friendly manufacturers

Korean companies are stepping up efforts to introduce greener products.

According to industry sources on Monday, one out of three eco-labeled products is produced by Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, with the two companies producing a combined total of nearly 3,000 such goods.

Under the eco-labeling certification system, a green stamp is put on goods that produce less pollution so that consumers can easily select green products. Of the 9,532 products certified as of the end of last year, those from Korea made up more than 30 percent.

Samsung is the leading eco-friendly electronics manufacturer with 2,210 of its home appliances and computers receiving the green stamp. Taiwan’s Acer is second with some 1,200 products, followed by Hewlett Packard of the U.S. at over just 1,000. LG ranks sixth with 772.

The Korean companies are looking to go even greener. Samsung is establishing an eco-design system to monitor the manufacturing process of all its products, while an LG factory has set a goal of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 10 million tons.
