Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri revealed on Friday that this province is a possible area for the development of renewable energy (RE), in particular wind power.

Zubiri, who was the guest speaker during the 51st founding day of the province, made the revelation in a press conference with the local media at the Governor’s office immediately after the anniversary program.

“Southern Leyte is one of ten possible areas nationwide that are favorable for wind power,” Zubiri, an adopted son of the province, told local journalists.

Zubiri cited a study done by the US Aid, in which among the ten potential wind energy sites all over the country, the province ranked either number 6 or 7.

The Senator said it has always been his ardent advocacy to bat for clean energy as well as the development of renewable energy sources, adding that he was instrumental for the passage into law last year of the Renewable Energy Act.

The flow of wind surging in the province all year round, where all 18 municipalities and one city lay along the coastline, can be studied very well for its potential to generate electrical power once harnessed, the Senator mused.

In Maasin City, strong southwest monsoon or habagat winds during this time of the year, from June to August, has been noted to have a force strong enough to sway coconut trees, but so far there was no technical knowledge whether such force can be converted into wattage.

Another possible clean energy source of the province was the steam energy explored in the mountains of the pacific area, but so far development has remained in its exploration stage, it was learned.
