SMA helps provide clean power to kids in Tahiti

SMA has teamed up with the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) and other partners to install a 53 kW solar PV array at the Zanmi Beni Home for Children in Tahiti.

SMA America donated six Sunny Boy 9000 TL-US transformerless solar inverters, six Sunny Island 5048-US battery backup inverters and a Multicluster Box for the installation. The equipment will work with 236 Trina Solar panels to create a hybrid off-grid/on-grid PV system with battery backup and enough capacity to supply most, if not all, the Home’s power requirements.

Zanmi Beni Home for Children provides long-term care to children affected by the devastating earthquake that occurred in the nation in January 2010. Tahiti is still reeling in the aftermath of the disaster, with access to reliable, clean energy a major ongoing issue.

“This has been an exceptionally rewarding project and SMA was thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the NRG and the Clinton Global Initiative to help improve the lives of these children with solar power,” said Jurgen Krehnke, president of SMA America and SMA Canada.

SMA’s transformerless inverters are lightweight and offer conversion efficiencies of up to 98 per cent and better efficiency across a range of conditions.

The Sunny Island creates an AC voltage grid and incorporates battery management and monitoring functions; able to activate a backup energy source (such as a generator) or switch off certain consumption loads when battery levels are low or generation capacity drops below a certain threshold.

The Multicluster Box is an off-grid AC distribution hub that can manages a variety of electricity generation sources.

SMA is the world’s leading inverter manufacturer. Its parent company, SMA Solar Technology AG, has its headquarters in Germany and last year celebrated 30 years in the solar industry. The firm has a staff of over 5,500, globally; with a presence in 20 countries on four continents, including Australia.  SMA solar inverters are a popular choice for Australian home solar power installations due to their performance and reliability in our often harsh conditions.
