Gyeonggi Province has decided to build solar power plants on public lands that are currently being unused.
The province is looking to turn a profit by renting the land, while power companies will be able build on large flatlands at a low price.
The plan has been proven practical and economically feasible as a domestic oil company has set up a solar facility on the rooftop of one of its gas stations and is selling the power to an electric company.
Provincial authorities plan to inject US$1.5 billion over the next two years to develop wind and solar power facilities.
