The Taichung municipal government signed a memorandum of understanding with the state government of Hawaii May 21 on cooperation in the green energy industry.
“The city of Taichung can learn a lot from Hawaii’s rich experience in promoting clean energy,” said Mayor Jason Hu, who inked the agreement on behalf of the central Taiwan metropolis.
Brian Schatz, lieutenant governor of Hawaii, said the memorandum marks an important beginning for bilateral cooperation and clean energy.
In September 2011, Hu was invited by the government of Hawaii to speak at the Asia Pacific Clean Energy Summit and Expo in the state capital Honolulu.
During the visit, Hu arrived at a consensus with Hawaiian officials on signing an agreement to spur opportunities for bilateral collaboration in the green energy sector.
In recent years, the Hawaiian government has actively promoted the development of clean energy, including solar, water and wind power, with the goal of meeting 70 percent of the state’s energy needs through such alternative sources by the year 2030. The US government has commended Hawaii as a model state for clean energy promotion.
The Taichung municipal government hopes the collaborative effort with Hawaii will bring about the development of related industries in the city, create more local job opportunities, and boost growth of the green economy.
