Vietnam joins nuclear non-proliferation talks

Vietnam’s nuclear non-proliferation stance and its nuclear energy development for peaceful, socio-economic development purposes have received the applause of participants in an international workshop that opened in Jakarta, Indonesia, on June 6.

The workshop, entitled “The future of nuclear non-proliferation treaty: perspectives of ASEAN” drew more than 60 scholars, researchers and representatives from state nuclear energy agencies and relevant organisations of ASEAN and foreign embassies in Indonesia.

Cao Hong Lam from the Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute said that Vietnam has adopted a strategy on peaceful use of nuclear energy until 2020 and a national strategy on energy development until 2025 and its vision until 2050.

Increasing fuel demands require Vietnam to develop nuclear energy to meet its economic growth, she said.

The potential to develop a network of nuclear power plants in Vietnam also attracted attention at the workshop.

At the two-day event, the delegates discussed the period to review the 2010-2015 nuclear non-proliferation treaty, nuclear safety and physical protection of nuclear materials, civil utilisation of nuclear technology in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear disaster and the Southeast Asia nuclear non-proliferation treaty and overview of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation treaty.
