Adnoc opens two eco-friendly service stations on Yas Island

Abu Dhabi - Adnoc Distribution, the fuel retailing arm of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) late on Saturday inaugurated its two environmentally-friendly service stations — Yas 1 and Yas 2 — on the Yas Island. The inauguration of the pumps are in line with Adnoc Distribution’s mandate to safeguard the emirate’s environment and its precious natural resources.

Shaikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs officially inaugurated the fuel stations in the presence of senior Adnoc Group executives.

The two service stations have been built with the use of locally manufactured bricks, aluminium and glass, with more than 50 per cent of the construction material sourced from local manufacturers.

“The two green service stations — Yas 1 and Yas 2 — are equipped with the latest eco-friendly technologies to deploy best practices in waste recycling and reduced energy consumption. Our commitment to sustainable energy management is also reflected in the use of eco-friendly lighting and air-conditioning systems throughout the facility. We have additionally placed a strong emphasis on the use of non-toxic gases that have a minimal impact on the ozone layer,” said Abdulla Salem Al Dhaheri, chief executive officer of Adnoc Distribution in his speech at the event. He added: “The company’s initiative to use compressed natural gas (CNG) as an alternative fuel in Abu Dhabi, followed by the establishment of maintenance centres to help vehicles run on natural gas are some of our noteworthy breakthroughs in sustainability.”

Following the launch of Yas 1 and Yas 2, Adnoc Distribution said it aims to open several more green stations across the emirate. The next green service station is scheduled to open on Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island, said Al Dhaheri, speaking to reporters after the inauguration.“Under phase I, we opened 17 CNG stations in Abu Dhabi, while under phase II, there are five new stations planned, one of which one has already opened,” said Al Dhaheri.

Under phase III, 12 service stations will be allocated to contractors, while under phase IV, there are 32 CNG stations planned, he added. The fuel will be sourced from Adnoc’s arm - Gasco.

Al Dhaheri said CNG stations under phase II and phase III would be ready by 2014-2015, while phase IV is scheduled to come on stream after 2015.

He said the idea is to maximise the usage of CNG as a motoring fuel, adding some 3,000 cars have been converted to dual fuel use, so far.

“The CNG is 30 per cent cheaper than gasoline. It’s cheaper and a cleaner fuel for consumers. The price of CNG is Dh1.37 per cubic metre, as compared with Dh1.72 per litre for Gasoline 95,” Al Dhaheri said.
