GRI and Fuji Xerox launch world’s first Global Standards for Sustainability Reporting in Singapore

GRI and Fuji Xerox are launching the world’s first global standards for sustainability reporting, the GRI Sustainability Reporting Standards (GRI Standards), in Asia. The GRI Standards create a common language for companies to disclose non-financial information and enable companies around the world to better assess their impacts on the economy, the environment and society. Businesses can also use the GRI Standards to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Held in Singapore, the launch event was organized by GRI and Fuji Xerox, with support from Entrak and Paia Consulting.

“Fuji Xerox is a leader in sustainability reporting, and GRI helps us to better-manage our sustainability impacts in Singapore and other countries in Asia Pacific,” said Janet Neo, Head of Corporate Sustainability, Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific. “As we accelerate our growth in the region, the new GRI Standards will help us positively influence other organizations in our network – including suppliers and subsidiaries – towards a greater commitment to sustainability.”

The GRI Standards were released in October 2016 and were developed through more than 15 years of a robust multi-stakeholder process. They feature an improved format and new modular structure, and are based on the GRI G4 Guidelines (G4) – the world’s most widely used sustainability reporting disclosures. The new GRI Standards definitively replace G4, which will be phased out by 1 July 2018. The Singapore launch event is timely, given that the Singapore Exchange (SGX) has adopted a policy that will require listed companies to either disclose sustainability information, or explain why they are not doing so. This ‘comply-or-explain’ framework will be effective on, or after 31 December 2017; depending on the companies’ financial year cycles.

“The GRI Standards make it easier for companies to report non-financial information, by using a shared, well-understood language,” said GRI Interim Chief Executive Eric Hespenheide. “The GRI Standards are more straightforward, thereby making them accessible to potentially millions of businesses worldwide. Sustainability reporting through the GRI Standards is the best way for companies to disclose economic, environmental and social impacts, thus providing insights into its contributions – positive or negative – toward sustainable development.”

Ms Neo said, “As the first GRI GOLD Community Member from the document management and solutions sector, Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific is proud to lead this peer-to-peer driven interactive platform, to foster a community of sustainable businesses.” GRI Gold Community Members are the core players shaping the future of sustainability reporting.

“Fuji Xerox sees corporate social responsibility as synonymous with corporate management,” Ms Neo added. “We believe that sustainability must be at the core of the business, in order for economies to thrive and businesses to succeed. Such thinking shapes the values and culture of the company as we continue to develop innovative solutions that foster sustainable economic growth.”

The Singapore launch will feature a panel session entitled ‘Sustainability Standards and Non-Financial Information: Improving Business Decisions.’ Panelist include: Janet Neo, Head of Corporate Sustainability, Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific; Yeo Lian Sim, Special Advisor, SGX; Yvonne Chan, Director of Corporate Development, Maritime Port of Authority Singapore; and Wilson Ang, Executive Director, Global Compact Network Singapore. The session will offer a wealth of useful information on the SGX’s sustainability disclosure requirements for listed companies and explore Singapore’s current reporting landscape. The panel will also cover other topics, including the future of sustainability reporting, how sustainability initiatives can relate to corporate strategy, and how sustainability data can empower companies to make better business decisions.

Fuji Xerox is focused on providing strategies and solutions for its customers that guarantee accurate energy reporting and monitoring, while featuring visibility data into any specific areas of high-consumption, which may then be analyzed for potential cost reductions. Additionally, features such as digitized paper documents, secure print release policy, Print-on-Demand, and configurable device power settings are able to further increase overall energy-efficiency rates, which ultimately leads to reduced impact on cost and the environment.
