Phoenix, AZ announced as first city to join Smart City Hack 2016

The council of Phoenix, Arizona has become the first city to join 2016’s Smart City Hack season.

Following on from a great collaboration last year which saw five impressive projects incubated with SCH and a finale picked up by television crews, Smart City Hack is happy to reveal that Phoenix’s smart citizens will soon be submitting more innovative ideas. Smart City Hack Co-Founder Steffan Becker had this to say -

‘We’re so happy to see Phoenix get on board once more. They’ve got a keen eye on what the future can bring to their citizens’.

Amongst the strong apps created last year were HER Shopping App, a user friendly interface that could complete purchases and make reservations through voice search alone and the winning ParkX App, which offers tailored mobile payment for parking. Local app developers, entrepreneurs and residents are invited to submit web or mobile applications that incorporate solutions targeted to improve the five main themes identified as common global challenges: Urban Mobility, Energy and Emissions, Health and Welfare, Culture and Tourism and the Collaborative city.

This year sees the theme of ‘Shopping & Retail’ dropped to focus on the fastly growing mHealth sector as well as opening submissions to all tech and not purely mobile apps. The top apps from this program will be invited to present and compete in the final award gala, taking place in Barcelona during the Smart City Expo 2016 in November.

Full info on SCH and its 2016 themes can be found below. Smart City Hack (formerly Smart City App Hack) launched its second edition this April, again focused on tackling the challenges facing 21st century cities and intent on connecting councils, developers and organisations so their ideas can be transformed into real solutions.

Additionally SCH16 is again providing participating areas the opportunity to share information with a network of cities from around the world suffering the same issues and looking for the same solutions.

This second edition sees some new features added to the project. The participation criteria will now be open to all technologies (IoT, Mobile Applications etc…) that can help larger populaces tackle the following themes: Urban Mobility, Energy and Emissions, Health and Welfare, Culture and Tourism and Collaborative Cities.

Cities around the world who wish to participate can register by emailing cities@smartcityhack.com or by filling out the contact form found here.
