Rosenergoatom to launch first unit of Novovoronezh NPP-2 in June

Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC, a unit of the State Corporation Rosatom, said today it plans to launch the first unit of Novovoronezh NPP-2 in mid to late June 2016.

The company’s head of the nuclear power station business, Vladimir Povarov, announced this at the company’s scientific and technical conference titled “Safety, Efficiency and Economics of Nuclear Energy”.

Connection of power unit to the grid will be in the later part of June, he said.

It was reported that on May 20 the first unit of Novovoronezh NPP-2 was launched on the minimum controlled power level. On March 24 Rosenergoatom carried out the physical start of the block.

Novovoronezh NPP-2 (power units №6 and №7) is constructed for replacement of the third and fourth units of Novovoronezh NPP-1, which should be decommissioned in 2016 and 2017.

The first unit of Novovoronezh NPP-2 is the world’s first head unit of a new Generation-III nuclear power plants. NPP project with VVER-1200 reactor is developed by JSC “AEP” (Moscow). It is the next evolutionary modification in the line of VVER designs.

It meets all the requirements of safety, environmental protection and sanitation laws, the requirements of the IAEA and Europen Utility Requirements for LWR Nuclear Power Plants.

All the safety features of this project are provided by an independent work of active and passive systems, which guarantee reliable operation of the plant and its resistance to external and internal shocks. The project has passed more than 20 special missions of the IAEA, and was recognized by experts as one of the safest.

The main feature of the project is the use of additional passive systems, which works due to inartificial processes, in combination with conventional active safety systems. It greatly reduces the impact of human factors on safety. There is protection against earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, aircraft crash.

In general, the equipment and technologies used in the construction of Novovoronezh NPP-2 are in many ways unique and innovative, the company said.

The project was implemented with the use of the most powerful to date type of VVER series reactor. Speed turbine, designed specifically for the new generation of power unit, has been developed for the project. These solutions are intended to improve the efficiency and reliability of nuclear power plants. In particular, the utilisation rate of installed capacity was increased, the service life of the main equipment of the reactor plant increased up to 60 years, the estimated life of building structures - 100 years.

Currently power units with VVER-1200 reactors at different stages of implementation are at the Leningrad NPP-2, Novovoronezh NPP-2, as well as at the nuclear power plant in Belarus, Turkey, Egypt, Finland, Hungary and Bangladesh.
