‘Sustain-a-City: an urban innovation challenge’ invites youths to share their vision for sustainable, net-zero cities

Temasek’s Ecosperity platform has launched Sustain-a-City: An Urban Innovation Challenge, a competition that invites youths to imagine what a sustainable, net-zero city would look like. The competition is an initiative by Ecosperity, Temasek’s key platform for sustainability engagement and advocacy, in partnership with Arkki Singapore, a leading school of architecture and creativity for youth.

Cities are critical in the fight against climate change: Over half of the world’s population currently resides in urban areas and that number is expected to grow to 68 per cent by 2050, up from 55 per cent today. Cities also account for more than 70 per cent of global carbon dioxide emissions today, underscoring just how critical sustainable urban development is. Sustain-a-City aims to inspire youths to think about how we can reduce carbon emissions from cities even as urban populations and economies continue to grow.

The competition invites students to design and develop innovative solutions for cities that address one or more of the following themes: Energy and Resource SystemsFuture of MobilitySustainable Buildings & InfrastructureWaste Management & Circular Economy; and Nature & Biodiversity. Adopting a fully digital format, the competition is open to all registered students between the ages of 18 and 25, as of date of registration.

Students can register as individuals or in teams of up to three from now until 5 April 2023. Successful registrants will undergo a semi-guided process through virtual workshops held in April. These workshops will provide participants with added perspectives on topics ranging from urban planning to sustainable product design from industry players, as well as mentorship by coaches from Arkki Singapore.

Participants’ submissions - in the form of a short video and a supporting essay - will be evaluated by a panel of judges, which includes Temasek’s Head of Real Estate, Alpin Mehta, GoTo Group’s Head of Sustainability Tanah Sullivan, SJ CityGlobal’s CEO Nina Yang and WWF-Singapore’s Conservation Director Elizabeth Clarke.

S$18,000 in prize money will be awarded to the top three teams. The top two teams will also get the opportunity to experience an enriching 5-day learning trip to Helsinki, Finland, hosted by Arkki Finland. There will also be a S$2,000 cash prize for the winner of the People’s Choice Award. Winners will be announced at Temasek’s Ecosperity Week in June 2023.
