Sustainability expert Dr Gulsara Edilbaeva advocates safety

Dr Gulsara Edilbaeva from ENRC will be sharing her expertise on the culture of owning safety at the 3rd Global Health and Safety Forum in Mining, on 16-17 September 2013 at the Radisson Blu Gautrain Hotel, Sandton Johannesburg.

29 July 2013, Johannesburg: The involvement of the top management in providing and ensuring the highest standards of health and safety for its miners has gained a lot of importance. Dr Gulsara Edilbaeva, Group Head of Sustainable Development, ENRC is a strong advocate of management commitment to occupational health and safety for all levels in the organisation.

In a recent interview with the Fleming Gulf Conferences team, she said, “For safety measures to be most effective, involvement and commitment must exist from the top down through all levels of the management and this establishes the importance of safety and guarantees support for individual elements of the safety program. By involving management, you are starting the process of management owning safety.” She believes that the lack of effective communication is the biggest challenge between having the knowledge and actual implementation of health and safety guidelines.

With respect to the means in which the management can communicate its responsibility to keep its employees safe and healthy, she said, “Management must lead by example and believe that safety is as important as cost, productivity, quality, and employee relations. Management needs to build a culture of trust and openness that shows that they really care.”

Speaking at the 3rd Global Health and Safety Forum in Mining, taking place on 16-17 September in Johannesburg, South Africa, Dr Edilbaeva will address occupational health and safety professionals from top mining companies on bridging the gap between knowledge and implementation, and on how the organisation can inculcate the culture of owning safety.

The conference will also feature speakers and panelists including Anthony Coutinho, Department of Mineral Resources, Director - Mine Safety, South Africa; Brian Chicksen, AngloGold Ashanti, VP Safety, South Africa; Philip Stephenson, Newmont Mining, VP Health Safety Loss Prevention & Security, US; Dr. Frank Fox, Anglo American, Head of Occupational Health, South Africa; Mr Thabo Dube, CEO, Mine Health and Safety Council among others.

This conference will provide two days of industry specific information along with the opportunity to network and exchange business ideas with the corporate leaders of the mining industry.
