T’ang Court brings EcoChic fashion and dining to The Langham, Hong Kong

Located in The Langham, Hong Kong, two Michelin-starred restaurant T’ang Court will debut environmentally conscious garments worn by the staff in its continuing commitment to sustainable conservation on 4 November 2015. Emerging sustainable fashion designer and winner of The EcoChic Design Award 2014/15 second prize in partnership with the hotel, Victor Chu created textile waste-reducing uniforms that reflect the restaurant’s timeless fashion.

Inspired by China’s imperial Tang dynasty, the new made-to-measure apparel is interlaced in red and black colours to create a sense of both elegance and grandeur. The curvaceous lines on the female attire represent T’ang Court’s spiral staircase, while the male uniforms have rounded collars mirrored after the fashion trend during that era.

Victor applied his sustainable knowledge to design minimal waste uniforms, to utilise the durable materials to maximum capacity. Female jackets are designed without lapels or pocket flaps and select male shirts have shorter stand-up collars as opposed to a traditional turnover style to reduce the use of additional material. Cut-offs from garment production were incorporated into the uniforms collars and pockets to ensure minimal fabric wastage.

Increasing further the sustainable commitment made by The Langham, Hong Kong, all staff uniforms are laundered using environmentally safe dry cleaning solutions which use water-soluble detergents in place of traditional heavy chemicals. Outdated and end-of-life uniforms are donated to charity.

The EcoChic Design Award is an international sustainable fashion design competition inspiring emerging fashion designers and students to create mainstream clothing using the sustainable design techniques of zero-waste, up-cycling and reconstruction methods to cut waste out of fashion.

Victor is currently working as a freelance designer having recently graduated from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University with a Fashion and Textile Design degree. He says “this project allowed me to put the theory and techniques I learned from The EcoChic Design Award into practice. Through my design I wanted to create a uniform that respected the history of the restaurant while adding a modern twist, combined with my ethos around sustainability. I am excited to bring sustainable fashion to life in T’ang Court”.

To celebrate the launch of the minimal waste uniforms, T’ang Court presents an environmentally conscious menu where guests can choose a vegetarian only a la carte option or a six-course set menu. Available on Mondays and Fridays for lunch, featured dishes on the a la carte menu include the Stuffed Tomato with Stir-Fried Mixed Mushrooms, Fungus and Black Truffle in Pumpkin Soup and Glutinous Dumplings filled with Guava and Coconut served with chilled Guava Jelly.

As for the set menu, highlights are the Sautéed Macadamia Nuts, Water Chestnuts and Mushrooms in a Taro Nest and the Double Boiled Soup with Bamboo Fungus, Chinese Cabbage and Japanese Cepe Mushrooms. All ingredients from the menu are locally sourced to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

The six-course set lunch menu is priced at HK$280 per person, subject to 10 per cent service charge.
