The REDD desk announces new country databases

The Global Canopy Programme (GCP)’s REDD desk (www.theredddesk.org) is pleased to announce the release of the latest in a series of unique databases tracking country level progress towards REDD+[1].

The latest countries to be covered by the REDD Desk are Colombia, Guatemala, Bolivia, Costa Rica and Vanuatu, adding to a collaborative global research study now covering 26 countries.

The REDD Desk country databases include information and analysis on areas relevant to national progress towards REDD readiness, including all initiatives, actors, laws and financing related to efforts to reduce emissions from deforestation and degradation.

The latest research showcases the variety of national approaches towards REDD+, including: Costa Rica’s leadership in the area of Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES), Colombia’s impressive progress in establishing operational REDD+ pilot projects; and Bolivia’s unique national approach, parallel to REDD+, which seeks a new path to avoided deforestation, forest conservation and sustainable management.

Christopher Bartlett, Climate Change Advisor GIZ Vanuatu, says: “The Vanuatu country REDD+ profile enables real progress on the aspirations of transparency, openness and collaboration that Vanuatu has embraced in its approach to governing climate change and disaster risk reduction.

The information contained in the profile is up-to-date and fully acknowledges the work of the Government and its many partners on its path to REDD+ readiness. Available to the public, this online profile is a one-stop-fully-stocked-shop for the latest info on REDD+ in Vanuatu. Kudos to the REDD Desk for its outstanding support to the country on this initiative.”

Matt Leggett, Head of Policy, Global Canopy Programme, says: “The REDD Desk is a uniquely powerful knowledge management tool. It is the only place on the web where users can not only access clear information and expert analysis on national progress on REDD+, but can see at a glance how lessons drawn from one national context can provide clarity on wider international efforts to reduce emissions from deforestation and degradation. The reliance on in-country primary research and a truly global network spanning 26 countries provide the REDD Desk with a distinctive edge as a knowledge management tool for policy makers.”

About REDD
REDD is a global mechanism designed to offer positive incentives to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD), and to promote the conservation, management and enhancement of forest stocks in developing countries (REDD+).

About the REDD desk
GCP’s REDD Desk was initially launched in late 2009 as a centralised collaborative knowledge platform to increase transparency and accessibility of information on REDD+ readiness. It was developed after the success of GCP’s first publication, The Little REDD Book[2], launched in Poznan in 2008, and is now accessed by approximately 11 000 unique visitors per month from over 100 countries worldwide. With over 4000 pages of data, the REDD Desk reflects the large amount of research and lessons learnt on REDD+ readiness and implementation over the last few years and is the world’s largest online resource for REDD+ information, news and analysis.

The REDD desk was re-launched in November 2013 to include new tools such as a REDD+ Encyclopaedia, deeper country information and cutting edge analysis on Markets and Standards. The REDD desk thus supports greater understanding, knowledge sharing, and capacity building for the implementation of REDD+ worldwide.
