New York, Monday 18 March 2013. In the global market for the design and implementation of IT systems that support energy and environmental management, Accenture, CGI, Deloitte and IBM have emerged as the standout leaders, according to a new benchmark report from independent analyst firm Verdantix. The findings are based on interviews with 15 buyers representing firms with revenues of $183 billion. The supplier benchmark covers capabilities for the design and implementation of IT systems for the energy management of buildings, data centers, manufacturing plants, renewable energy, smart meters and utility grids as well as IT systems for environmental management such as water and climate change.
‘’To make the grade as a market leader our analysis found that technology services firms need to get six things right’’ commented Phil Sayer, Verdantix Principal Analyst. “Leaders require a critical mass of consultants to drive innovation, a single leader for the corporate sustainability program and commercial practice, strategic acquisitions to add depth to otherwise thin energy and environment expertise, a broad portfolio of offerings across energy and sustainability, consulting expertise to open the door to larger IT implementation projects and a willingness to invest in marketing sustainable technology solutions to new target buyers.”
The Verdantix report, ‘Green Quadrant: Sustainable Technology Services (Global) 2013’ provides a detailed, fact-based comparison of the 16 largest global technology service providers. In addition to the four standout leaders, another four IT services firms – Atos, Dimension Data, TCS and Wipro – are also positioned in the Leaders’ Quadrant. In the last 12 months, Dimension Data has emerged as a strong player in the design and implementation of IT energy systems for buildings and data centers. Another new entrant to the Leaders’ quadrant, TCS, has a broad set of capabilities with a strong play in IT systems for manufacturing energy management.
According to the customer panel, IBM, HP and Deloitte have achieved the highest level of brand awareness for their offerings across energy and environmental management. In a separate Verdantix global survey of 250 heads of energy, these three tech services also achieved the highest brand awareness scores. According to the customer panel, 67% had hired a technology services firm to support their IT and telecoms energy management in the past two years, 60% for sustainability management software and 53% for manufacturing energy management IT systems. One hundred per cent of the customers surveyed consider that an ethical supply chain policy is important when selecting a supplier in an RFP process, with scores of 80% for waste and recycling and 70% for carbon reduction.
“Over the past three years the Verdantix benchmark of technology services firms has revealed that a long-term commitment to delivering energy, environment and sustainability projects pays big dividends. The committed players gain traction by winning the small number of multi-million dollar contracts up for bid each year. Other suppliers are struggling due to margin pressure in the business as a whole, reorganizations that crushed their fledgling sustainability practice or an inability to win projects due to feeble energy and environment expertise.”
