Malaysia needs better solutions to manage its waste. The nation, which generates roughly 39,000 tonnes of waste every day, still experiences a low recycling rate despite efforts, with much of its plastic waste ending up in landfills. The country, however, is set to embark on its Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) journey and hold producers accountable for the lifecycle of their products, including the post-consumer stage.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), The Royal Norwegian Embassy and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Malaysia hosted a roundtable discussion in July 2024, inviting key stakeholders across government, industry, and civic society to discuss the road ahead for Malaysia’s EPR journey.
This report presents key insights from the discussion and explores how Malaysia can reference other nations’ existing efforts in recycling and collecting waste, and lead Southeast Asia’s waste management efforts, particularly with the potential introduction of a Deposit Return System (DRS) and in leveraging its existing recycling infrastructure.
