Leading the Change for a Sustainable Future
By Sir Jonathon Porritt, Founder Director, Forum for the Future
The Context — Businesses are faced with the challenges of resource constraints, climate change risks and an increasingly uncertain global economy. They also face customers and employees who are starting to come to terms with the potential impact of climate change with Asia predicted to be the region hardest hit. Business responsibility towards stakeholder groups has started to take on whole new meanings in the past decade.
The Challenge — The global sustainability movement needs to engage Asian business families, and business families in Asia have a real opportunity to play a leading role in meeting the challenges of sustainability in an influential and meaningful way.
The Change — The long-term mindset of Asian business families means they are more likely to foster long-term business and investment strategies. When business owners think in generational terms, there is a natural gravitation to think about sustainability. Can Asian business families make the leap from spending their wealth responsibly to making their wealth responsibly?
Philanthropy for a Sustainable Future
By Ms. Catherine Loh, Chief Executive, Community Foundation of Singapore (CFS)
The Commitment — Asian business families are usually concerned about and therefore committed to the cause of the communities in which they exist. Given this paradigm, multi-generational discussion about and commitment towards one’s family’s philanthropic platforms can go a long way towards ensuring the continuation of a stewardship mindset and perpetuate one’s family’s values. CFS will share on how philanthropy can strengthen business families and create a family legacy for future generations.
