Artificial intelligence has already begun to change the world as we know it. From acting as an education tool to help students learn, to boosting efficiency and productivity among working professionals, to assisting medical workers in improving patient outcomes – AI will soon permeate just about every aspect of life. In fact, AI is projected to contribute significantly to the world’s economic activity, with estimated increases of around US$14 trillion by 2035, according to an Accenture study.
AI could add another US$1 billion to ASEAN’s economy by the decade’s end, with tech giants like Google, Microsoft and Amazon already investing in AI initiatives in the region.
AI can also accelerate the launch of solutions to the most pressing climate-related challenges and propel the world towards achieving sustainable development, however, this is only if regulations exist towards AI’s ethical and safe use, a study published by the United Nations University highlights.
What is often overlooked is the gargantuan amounts of energy – and the resulting emissions — that are required to power AI. These emissions – usually the result of high-energy intensity data centers – are now responsible for close to 4 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions. This is more than all the emissions from the aviation sector.
Beyond AI’s impact on climate change, there are concerns that people will become overreliant on AI – leading to a decline in critical thinking and problem-solving skills – displace or replace jobs, and be exploited by those with ill intentions.
This begs the question: How can AI be used sustainably – and by default – responsibly? How can future marketing professionals harness AI for good?
Join us at StratMark 2024 on 8 October 2024, organised by the Philippine Marketing Association (PMA) in partnership with Asia’s leading sustainability media organisation Eco-Business, where esteemed speakers from across the region will gather to discuss the potential AI affords and key challenges to overcome as the planet thrusts itself into a new – yet arguably uncertain – technological era.
