More than a hundred solar photovoltaic manufacturers may be acquired or fold over the next two years, a solar industry report forecasts. GTM Research’s Shyam Metha said the bulk of these solar companies will come from the high-cost manufacturing markets in the US, Europe and Canada and one of the reasons is that these firms face tough competition with China’s low manufacturing costs. 54 of the 180 solar firms predicted to fold will be coming from China, added Mehta. Many of these Chinese companies, he said are ‘solar zombies’ - manufacturing with less than 300MW capacities but operating uncompetitively on state support.
