3.2 per cent of Australia’s electricity comes from solar panels

Solar panel installations now represent 3.2 per cent of Australia’s electricity generation capacity, said the latest report from the Clean Energy Council. The report said 2011 has been a prophetic year in the impact of solar energy, clearly showing where Australia’s electricity industry is going. The report also said 859MW of solar photovoltaics were installed in 2011, more than double the number of solar PVs in 2010. The bulk of the sales are still from the residential sector, capturing 95 per cent of the market. The report also stressed that the idea that solar power is only for the rich is a myth, citing that half of solar PV buyers earn less than $100,00 annually.
