Audits aim to save energy in govt buildings

In a first, the Bihar Renewable Energy Development Agency (BREDA) in collaboration with the Centre has conducted energy audit of the state capital’s major 14 government buildings to make an assessment of the amount of energy consumed. It is aimed to initiate a process to minimize the wastage of energy in government buildings.

M/s EPIC Energy Limited, Mumbai, has already completed the energy auditing of four government buildings under the scheme, Investment Grade Energy Audit (IGEA). These buildings are Udyog Bhawan, office of the divisional commissioner, S K Memorial Hall and Central Industrial Security Force(CISF) building.

In the second phase, M/S Ashta Dal Services, Delhi, has conducted IGEA for remaining 10 buildings — Raj Bhawan, Vikas Bhawan (New Secretariat), Old Secretariat (including Barrak-29), Sichai Bhawan, Vidhan Mandal (Vidhan Sabha and Vidhan Parishad), Vidhan Sabha Annexe, Vidhan Parishad Annexe, Police Computer Bhawan, Vishweshwaraiah Bhawan and Technology Bhawan.

The draft of the energy audit of these 14 government buildings has already been sent to the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), a statutory body working under the department of new renewable energy, GOI.

“The final audit report is expected within a couple of months,” BREDA deputy director Raj Mohan Jha told TOI. “Once we receive the final reports of the energy audit, we would forward it to the departments concerned of the government,” he said.

“We are not entitled to punish anyone for consuming extra energy, but along with the audit report we would give them suggestion for energy conservation,” Jha said.

BREDA is also in the process of replacing high energy consuming equipment like tubelights and bulbs with CFL, he said. “BREDA is expected to carry out similar IGEA every year now onwards so as to keep the records of energy consuming trends in these buildings,” informed Jha.

Meanwhile, the BEE has also created a Bihar State Energy Conservation Fund. This fund carries a sum of Rs 2 crore and it would be utilized for replacing the traditional high energy consuming equipment.
