Aviation carbon tax to hit new presidential agenda

As soon as the dust settles on the US presidential election, the country’s airlines will be calling the President’s attention to the contentious European Union Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). The scheme, which was designed to curb carbon emissions in the airline industry, has caused an international row this year as the EU decided to include all airlines using its airports under the ETS. US airlines see the scheme as a sovereignty violation and the country is set to use local legislation to block its implementation.

In Asia, India had earlier warned that the issue could derail international climate talks in Doha in November. Both China and India have missed the deadline this year to submit their respective carbon emissions data under the scheme.
