Biofuel producer increasing production

Pilbara biofuel producer ASHOIL says it is looking to double its production by next year.

The subsidiary of the Ashburton Aboriginal Corporation turns waste cooking oil from Rio Tinto’s mining camps into biodiesel for drill and blast operations at Rio’s Tom Price mine.

The corporation’s CEO Janet Brown says they are aiming to push production to 20,000 litres a week by next year.

She says the increase will depend in part on the success of a trial Moringa tree plantation which will provide an additional source of biofuel.

“There is only so much used cooking oil we can collect in the Pilbara and unless people start walking away from healthy lifestyles and go back to extreme fried food, we’re always going to have a sustainability issue,” she said.
