British ambassador expects broader cooperation with China on low-carbon economy

Chinese and British companies have made great collaborative efforts in the low-carbon economy, but there are more collaborations in store for the two countries, Sebastian Wood, British ambassador to China said.

Chinese entrepreneurs should get in touch with the embassy or UK Trade and Investment offices around China for more cooperation opportunities in the new low-carbon economy, said Wood Thursday when addressing a forum prior to the opening of Annual Summit of China’s Green Companies in Qingdao, a coastal city in east China’s Shandong province.

The urgency for tackling the dangers of climate change could not be clearer, Wood said. “Since the industrialization of the United Kingdom, the industries of the world have emitted around 500 billion tonnes of carbon into the earth’s atmosphere.”

In an era of high fossil fuel prices, businesses can still strive to reduce energy costs and win a share of the growing global market for low-carbon goods and services, said the ambassador.

Companies from both countries are already working together in the UK to explore business opportunities with positive impacts on reducing carbon, he said.

Expanding collaborations in the low-carbon economy could be part of the partnership for growth that leaders from China and the UK discussed in their recent meeting, said Wood.

The Annual Summit of China’s Green Companies, organized by the China Entrepreneur Club and launched in 2007, is expected to provide a platform for the exchange of ideas amongst policy makers, entrepreneurs and NGOs and, therefore, boost sustainable development.

More than 100 well-known entrepreneurs and experts attended this year’s two-day summit which ends on Friday.
