Busways to operate in Makassar, Padang, and Surabaya

The Transportation Ministry plans to build Bus Rapid Transportation (BRT) systems (busways) in Makassar, Padang and Surabaya this year, in efforts to reduce traffic congestion in those cities.

The central and local administrations have been working together to develop the new busway networks, Transportation Ministry spokesman Bambang Supriyadi Ervan said Tuesday.

Bambang said the three cities would hire a private company to operate the networks, and provide a complete service to passengers.

“We will allow each local government to develop the project. The ministry will fully support them,” he said as quoted by tribunnews.com.

Bambang said the government expected to have BRT systems in all provincial capitals by 2015.
