Call for more electric car charging stations

The City of Sydney Council is preparing for the rise of electric vehicles with a plan to install 10 electric car charging stations at city parking stations by the end of the financial year.

Currently there is one charging station - in Derby Pl, Glebe - where the council is trialling two Mitsubishi i-MiEV electric cars.

Last month Lord Mayor Clover Moore asked parliament to issue a technical direction to reserve on-street parking bays for recharging stations. This comes after similar requests by the Environment and Heritage Office, Google, City of Sydney Council, NRMA and major property developers.

Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian responded positively, saying the Roads and Traffic Authority had agreed to work with the council on the matter.

Ms Moore said electric cars were our future.

“Given the important role electric vehicles will play in the future, it is essential that NSW prepares for this emerging technology,” she said.

“Electric vehicles create less pollution, noise and, when powered by low carbon energy, greenhouse gas emissions.”
