China added 15.4 GW of new wind power capacity last year, says the National Energy Administration (NEA), down four per cent on the previous year, although analysts cautioned that the data conflicts with other sources.
Numbers released by the State Electricity Regulatory Commission (SERC) on Jan 15 show that new, grid-connected wind capacity reached only 12.9GW during 2012, although it said total grid-connected wind capacity is now close to 61GW – not far off the NEA cumulative figure of 62.4GW.
The discrepancy between the two agencies raised questions about whether the NEA figure included grid-connected capacity or only new installations.
Growth of new wind power capacity has surged in China in recent years, turning it into the world’s largest wind market. But getting wind farms connected to the grid has tended to lag significantly behind installation of turbines.
