China’s conflicting path towards growth and sustainability

China’s outgoing President Hu Jintao has laid out the path the emerging economy will take in the next years that promise environmental protection and a contradictory GDP-driven strategy. In a 64-page report Hu said China plans to prioritise ecological progress and sustainable development but also to double its GDP. But experts said the speech does not say anything substantial and only serves as a reminder that the Asian giant has consistently missed its energy conservation targets during the presidency of Hu.
