Contract for 36 MW waste to energy facility in China

Fisia Babcock Environment GmbH (FBE) has won its first waste to energy order in the Chinese market for a 1,000 tonnes per day plant that will achieve a thermal output of 36 MW in total.

The order for the two-line waste incineration plant, which will be commissioned 2012, and was placed by Hefei Thermoelectric Group Ltd.

Due to its booming economy, waste generation in China has increased considerably over recent years. FBE says that this means that the market for waste incineration plants is also growing quickly, and that this order has will substantially support its progress in the increasingly important Chinese market.

Waste in China contains a high proportion of organic materials. According to FBE, this means that the moisture content is extremely high and the calorific value is very low. In spite of these unfavourable properties an effective firing process must ensure self-maintaining combustion.

The company says that to deal with this it has developed a modified moving grate, based on proven technology that has been adapted to these particular conditions.

The project supported by FBE’s subsidiary company Fisia Babcock Engineering Consulting (Shanghai) Co. Ltd. (FBES). This company was established three years ago.

In addition, as co-owner of Shanghai Pucheng Thermal Power Energy Co. Ltd., which is operating a waste incineration plant in Shanghai district Pudong, FBE says that it is acquiring operating experience in conjunction with Chinese waste.

FBE managing director Gert Riemenschneider comments, “This knowledge is giving us a significant competitive edge with regard to the engineering of new plants”
