Dong Nai to relocate industrial zone to curb pollution

Southern Dong Nai province has decided to remove the Bien Hoa Industrial Zone 1 at a cost of more than VND11 trillion ($523.8 million) to reduce pollution on the Dong Nai River.

The project will be carried out by Sonadezi Corporation from now to 2025, with three phases. Almost 50% of the capital will be used to assist factories inside the IZ.

Most businesses will be moved to the Giang Dien IZ in Trang Bom district. After the relocation, the entire land area of the current IZ will be devoted to an urban-residential development project.

Tran Minh Phuc, Vice Chairman of Dong Nai, said the relocation of Bien Hoa IZ 1 is urgently needed to deal with environmental pollution in the Dong Nai River.

Founded in 1963 under the name of Bien Hoa Technological Zone, after 1975 it was renamed Bien Hoa Industrial Zone 1. This is the first industrial park in Vietnam with an area of 324 hectares, located in An Binh Ward of Bien Hoa City. The IZ currently has 107 enterprises, employing 26,000 workers.

For 50 years of operation, the IZ has polluted the Dong Nai River, affecting 20 million people in the southern key economic region.
