The earth may face a water shortage by 2025 as the result of lack of concern for the environment causing a water conservation decrease, a spokesperson said here Wednesday.
Agus Hartono, Head of World Water Day commemoration committee here said the crisis would break out unless the ecosystem is well preserved.
“Water is the most important source to maintain human life for drinking, eating or farming,” he said in a river cleaning campaign at Bedog River, Sleman.
“The control of water resources is the responsibility of everybody, either those living near rivers or otherwise. Awareness to preserve water resources needs improvement,” he added.
He said people who lived near rivers could not be blamed for disposing of their rubbish in rivers because they actually were the victim of a bad bureaucracy system.
“Socialization is a good example and wiser than shouting slogans only, because socialization is highly appreciated,” he said.
Meanwhile, Nanang Suhendri, an environmental activist, said that there would be a new shortage of ground water following the Mt. Merapi eruption in 2010.
“The awareness to preserve rivers must be increased, at least by not littering indiscriminately,” he said. He added that water resources would become sustainable if water is controlled effectively.
