Firm bags contract to build Penang’s convention and exhibition centre

Eco Meridean Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of S.P. Setia Bhd has bagged the contract to construct the Penang International Convention Centre, now renamed Sub-terranean Penang International Convention and Exhibition (sPICE) Centre.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said sPICE Centre would be the first subterranean convention centre in Malaysia with a green park on the rooftop.

He said the RM300mil project would also include upgrading and refurbishment of the Penang International Sports Arena (Pisa) and the Aquatic Centre.

Lim said sPICE, together with Pisa, the Aquatic Centre and the park would be called the Penang People’s Park as a whole.

“We granted the tender to the company not only based on the price, quality and world class standard building management but also because of the green structure,” he said.

He said the Penang Municipal Council would bear RM50mil of the cost of the project while Eco Meridean Sdn Bhd would be responsible for the rest of it.
